NORWAY RATS

The Norway rat also known as the common rat, street rat, sewer rat, is not really from Norway but from Asia. They are generally bulky brown to grey colored fur.

Norway rats are omnivorous and feed on a variety of food sources. They prefer meats, fruits, grains and nuts, and some fruits but will really eat anything. Dead animals also serve as a food source for these rats, and they are capable of catching small fish and rodents. They require water to drink, and they make their colony as close to a water source as possible. They have limited agility, but are excellent swimmers.

Norway rats are primarily nocturnal. They usually enter properties in the fall when outside food sources become scarce and remain in the basement or ground floor.

Norway rats can cause damage to structures through their gnawing and eating. These rats are also vectors of diseases including plague, jaundice, rat-bite fever, cowpox virus, trichinosis and salmonellosis. In addition, Norway rats can contaminate food and introduce fleas into a home.
