Stink Bugs in Massachusetts

What Homeowners Need to Know

Stink bugs, specifically the brown marmorated stink bug (BMSB), are among the most persistent nuisance pests Massachusetts homeowners face each fall. Though harmless to humans, their foul odor and tendency to gather in large numbers make them both annoying and potentially problematic. At Heritage Pest Control, we’re here to help you identify, prevent, and manage stink bug invasions effectively.

What Are Stink Bugs?

Identification: Shield-shaped insects, typically brown or green, roughly 3/4" long. BMSB has distinct white-banded antennae and mottled abdomen—“marmorated” meaning marble-like markings.

Behavior & Lifecycle: These bugs invade homes in fall seeking warmth and hibernate (enter diapause), reactivating in spring—meaning they won’t reproduce indoors.

Impact:

Agricultural: Cause crop damage to apples, peaches, beans, soybeans, tomatoes, and more.

Home: They’re more nuisance than threat and  when squished, they release a potent odor and can stain surfaces.

Why Are They in Your Home?

Stink bugs invade in late summer into fall, drawn by warmth, light, and sheltered spaces like attics and wall crevices. Their ability to squish through tiny gaps (3–7 mm across) makes sealing entry nearly impossible, but still worthwhile. Once one enters, pheromones can attract others to the same area.

Identification & Signs in the Home

  • Visual cues: Look for clusters near upper-level windows, behind curtains, or in unused rooms.

  • Physical signs: A strong, coriander-like smell when disturbed.

  • Damage in the yard: Dimpled or scarred fruit, cloudy spots, or misshapen produce.

DYI Methods to Prevent Stink Bugs

  • Seal entry points (doors, windows, AC units, vents) with weather-stripping and caulk.

  • Reduce outdoor lighting or use yellow bulbs to make your home less attractive to stink bugs

  • Vacuum removal: Use a vacuum with a bag to suck them up (empty bag immediately into sealed garbage outside to prevent escape).
